When your baby is born, they will sleep a lot, they just will not sleep for long periods at a time because they need to wake up every three hours to get their food. The baby pattern usually goes like this: eat, poop, sleep, quiet awake time and then it repeats all over again. You may want to encourage your baby to sleep by themselves, but it is important that you stay near your baby. If you swaddle your baby up and hold the baby close to you, then they will start to sleep much better. A baby will feel comfortable and will feel the warmth and likes to be held.
